What is Home Health?

Home Health encompasses a wide range of skilled care provided by nurses, therapists, home health aides, social workers. These services are delivered in the comfort of the patient’s residence. Care is focused on helping people recover from surgery/injury, illness, accident, changed medical status, disabled or to manage a chronic condition.

Generally home health care is appropriate for those who prefer to stay at home but need ongoing care that family or friends can no longer provide. Electing to live independent lives, older people are increasingly opting for in home health care services. Adults who are disabled or recuperating from acute illness are choosing skilled nurse care as hospital stays decrease. Skilled home health care makes it possible for many to receive safe, effective care in the comfort of their chosen place of residence.

If you have Medicare, then you should know that home health services are covered 100% provided that certain criteria are met:

  1. Your physician must first decide that you are in need of skilled care in your home. The physician also needs to have plan of care that is provided to the home health agency.
  2. You must be in need of part-time intermittent skilled care, including either nursing, physical therapy, or speech language pathology therapy.
  3. Finally, Medicare requires that you fall into the category of "home bound." In other words, it is difficult for you to leave your home; therefore, you are only able to leave home infrequently for a short time or to receive medical care.

Private insurance will also pay for home care; however, benefits vary per policy and verification of benefits is required prior to initiating home health services.
